PowerPoint rehearse timings

Learn how to rehearse and record slide timings in PowerPoint, use the Rehearsal toolbar controls, verify slide durations, and troubleshoot playback.

To record slide timings by rehearsing in PowerPoint, you can launch the Rehearse Timings feature on the Slide Show tab, advance your presentation in full-screen mode to measure durations according to your speaking pace, and apply these timings to the presentation at the end of the show. This method ensures that the presentation advances automatically at the designated pace or provides the timing baseline for video exports.

Deciding Between Rehearse Timings and Slide Recording

There are two primary approaches to configuring timings in a PowerPoint presentation: recording only slide and effect durations, or creating a complete recording that includes narration, camera video, and ink strokes. If your goal is to set how long each slide remains on screen and enable the presentation to advance on its own without adding audio and video files, Rehearse Timings is the most direct solution Microsoft Support.

Conversely, if you want to capture microphone narration, webcam video, on-screen laser pointer movements, or pen drawings, you need to record your slide show via the Record menu on the ribbon. Running Rehearse Timings alone does not embed audio or video media into the presentation file; it only records the display durations of slides and animation steps in seconds. This prevents the file size from inflating and provides a clean per-slide timing template later when you export the PowerPoint presentation to MP4.

Prerequisites and Interface Check

Before starting your timing rehearsal, confirm that your presentation is open in supported desktop versions such as PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016 Microsoft Support. If you are using PowerPoint for the web, Microsoft recommends the Speaker Coach tool for the rehearsal experience; running the classic timing recording toolbar directly in the desktop application delivers the most precise result.

Prior to rehearsing, ensure that text blocks, transition effects, and animation triggers across the slides are finalized. Because you will trigger animations with mouse clicks or keystrokes while speaking during the live rehearsal, the content flow must be complete. If you want to hide or strip your notes before sharing your presentation with an audience, you can review the steps to share a PowerPoint presentation without speaker notes before the rehearsal.

Starting the Rehearsal Process and Managing the Toolbar

To start rehearsing timings, click the Slide Show tab and select the Rehearse Timings command. The moment you choose the command, the full-screen presentation begins and the Rehearsal toolbar appears. The timer starts running immediately upon clicking the command without delay Microsoft Support.

The Rehearsal toolbar includes the following controls:

Next: Advances to the next animation on the current slide or moves to the next slide. Pressing the Right Arrow key on your keyboard or clicking the mouse performs the same function Microsoft Support.

Pause: Temporarily halts timing recording. To restart the paused timer, click the Pause icon, the Play button, or the Resume Recording option Microsoft Support.

Slide Time: Located to the right of the Pause icon, this displays the duration measured so far for the current slide. If you want to set the exact duration a slide should stay on screen directly, you can type a timing value straight into this box Microsoft Support.

Repeat: Resets the timer only for the current slide, allowing you to restart rehearsing that specific slide from the beginning Microsoft Support.

Total Time: Located to the right of the slide time box, this shows the cumulative elapsed time across the entire presentation Microsoft Support.

Concrete Example: Rehearsing a Four-Slide Presentation

Let us follow step by step how these actions work in practice using a hypothetical four-slide product presentation:

Slide 1 (Title and Introduction): As soon as Rehearse Timings is selected, the timer begins counting. The speaker delivers the opening remarks and clicks the Next button at the 12-second mark. 12 seconds are recorded for Slide 1.

Slide 2 (Methodology): The speaker pauses at the 10-second mark and wants to retry the delivery. They press the Repeat button on the toolbar. The timer for Slide 2 resets; the speaker finishes the narration for this slide without interruption and clicks the Next button at 24 seconds.

Slide 3 (Process Steps): This slide contains two animated items. The first click brings up the first item, which is explained for 8 seconds. The second click reveals the second item, discussed for 10 seconds. The next click triggers the slide transition. A total duration of 18 seconds is recorded for Slide 3.

Slide 4 (Closing): After a 10-second conclusion, the presentation is complete.

After passing the last slide or right-clicking and selecting End Show, a dialog box opens on screen reporting the total time (for example, 01:04). Click Yes to retain the new slide timings, or No to exit without saving them Microsoft Support.

Verifying and Fine-Tuning Recorded Timings

When you select Yes to save timings, the presentation automatically switches to Slide Sorter view. You can also access this view at any time by going to View > Slide Sorter Microsoft Support. In Slide Sorter view, the duration assigned to each slide during rehearsal is listed in the lower-right corner of that slide.

To manually adjust the timing on a slide without repeating the entire rehearsal, follow these steps:

Return to Normal view and select the slide whose duration you wish to alter.

Go to the Transitions tab.

Under the Advance Slide heading in the Timing group, select the After check box and enter the number of seconds you want the slide to remain on screen Microsoft Support.

If you want the slide to advance both on a mouse click and automatically once the set seconds elapse, you can check both the On Mouse Click and After check boxes together Microsoft Support.

Common Pitfalls and Troubleshooting

Here are frequent issues encountered during or after the rehearsal process along with their solutions:

Slides advance automatically during a live presentation unintentionally: If you recorded timings for rehearsal purposes but want to control the actual presentation manually, uncheck the Use Timings check box on the Slide Show tab Microsoft Support. Alternatively, click the Set Up Slide Show button on the Slide Show tab and select Manually under the Advance slides heading Microsoft Support.

The first slide timer starts advancing immediately when rehearsal begins: The timer activates the instant the command is chosen. If you are caught off guard, you can reset the current slide timer directly by pressing the Repeat button without advancing to the next slide Microsoft Support.

Recorded timings need to be deleted entirely: To clear recorded timings, open the Clear menu on the Record or Slide Show tab; use Clear Timings on Current Slide to delete timings on the active slide, or Clear Timings on All Slides to remove them across the entire presentation Microsoft Support.

Rehearsal needs to be aborted without saving: You can exit the rehearsal by pressing the Esc key on your keyboard and discard the recordings by selecting No when prompted to save slide timings Microsoft Support.

Implementation Checklist

Ensure slide order, animations, and transition effects are finalized.

Launch the Rehearse Timings command from the Slide Show tab.

Once the timer starts, speak at your natural presentation pace and trigger transitions using Next, the Right Arrow key, or a mouse click.

If you stumble on a slide, use the Repeat button to reset only that slide's timer.

When needed, halt the timer using Pause and continue with Resume Recording / Play.

Check the elapsed duration in the confirmation prompt after the final slide and save by selecting Yes.

Switch to Slide Sorter view to verify the duration in the lower-right corner of each slide.

Uncheck Use Timings if necessary to prevent automatic progression during a live delivery.

Does Rehearse Timings also record microphone audio?

No. The Rehearse Timings feature records only the durations spent on slides and animations. To record spoken narration, camera video, or digital ink strokes, you must use the Record features on the ribbon Microsoft Support.

Can I advance the presentation manually without deleting recorded timings?

Yes. When you uncheck the Use Timings check box on the Slide Show tab or set Advance slides to Manually in the Set Up Slide Show dialog, the recorded timings are preserved, but the slides will not advance automatically on their own Microsoft Support.
