Libreoffice impress vs PowerPoint

Choose between Impress and PowerPoint by confirming the required file format, who will edit it, and where it will be opened. Keep an ODP master and check the delivery copy.

Short answer: What should guide your decision?

When choosing between LibreOffice Impress and PowerPoint, first find out the required delivery format and who will edit the file later. You may be able to prepare your presentation in Impress, keep it in ODP format, and also create a copy in a requested presentation format. However, the fact that a file can be opened in another application does not prove that every detail will look the same. For this reason, open the copy you plan to deliver in the application where it will be used and check it.

This comparison draws on the LibreOffice Impress Guide for information about Impress formats and interface, and on Chapter 10 of the guide for saving and exporting steps. The documents are based on LibreOffice 26.2; appearance or option names may differ in other versions. No separate technical claim is made here about features in specific versions of PowerPoint.

Determine your workflow first

Before deciding, answer these questions: Who will prepare the presentation? Who will edit the file? What format does the recipient want? Which application will be used to open the delivered copy? If the answers are unclear, do not assume that one format will suit everyone. Ask the recipient which format they want and, if applicable, which application they use.

Impress is LibreOffice’s presentation module, and its native presentation format is ODP. The official guide states that ODP presentations can be opened in other presentation software, such as PowerPoint, and that presentations can be saved and exported in different formats. The guide also gives PPT as an example. This indicates that file exchange is possible; it is not a guarantee that formatting and playback will remain the same in every file.

Which approach should you take?

If ODP delivery is suitable or you want to continue working in LibreOffice format, you can work in Impress using an ODP master file. For information about obtaining LibreOffice and supported systems, see the preface to the Impress Guide; this information applies to the version specified in the guide.

If the recipient requests a specific PowerPoint format, first open File > Save As in Impress and check the options in the format list. According to the guide, you can choose one of the recognized presentation formats; do not assume a particular format is available without checking the options. If the requested format is not listed, confirm with the recipient which formats they will accept. Saving the file in another format does not remove the need to test its appearance and behavior in the target application.

Hands-on example: a three-slide project summary

Hypothetical scenario: You are preparing a three-slide project summary. You will create the first draft in Impress, deliver it to a colleague, and check the file in case that person opens the presentation in another application.

  1. Create a new presentation in Impress. If your team requires a specific slide size, find that out before you begin. The guide gives the path for choosing a slide size as Slide > Slide Properties > Paper Format. If the names differ in your interface, verify the relevant option in your version.
  2. Draft the content: put the project name and objective on the first slide, two main work steps on the second, and a next step and the name of the person responsible on the third. This is only an example of how to organize content; it is not a claim about a specific design rule or software feature.
  3. Save your working file as ODP. The guide describes File > Save for ODP and File > Save As for creating a copy in another presentation format. Check that the option requested by the recipient is actually available in the format list. You can refer to Chapter 10 for saving options.
  4. Open the delivery copy in the target application. Review the slides one by one: Is the text visible? Are the elements in place? Do the images open? If you used animations or transitions, play the presentation and check the result as well. These are practical checks you can perform before delivering the file; they are not a claim that both applications handle every detail identically.
  5. After checking the file, keep your editable ODP master separate. If you made corrections in the delivery copy, also apply the necessary changes to your master file; this reduces the risk of the contents of the two copies diverging.

If the appearance or playback differs

If text or an object has shifted, open the affected slide in the target application and inspect the layout. If necessary, simplify the slide, save the copy again, and check it once more. Update the ODP master with the corrected content as well.

If a font or layout looks different, treat that as a specific difference you observed in the delivery copy; do not assume a particular software behavior in advance. If you have the opportunity to test the file on the device where the presentation will be given, do so. If an animation or transition does not look as expected, play it in the target application; consider avoiding the use of animation alone to convey important information.

If the recipient cannot open the file, check the extension, the format in which it was saved, and the format requested by the recipient again. If necessary, create a new copy; keep the ODP master file without overwriting the previous file. These steps make it easier to diagnose the problem, but they do not necessarily resolve an opening issue on their own.

Final checklist

  • I confirmed the file format requested by the recipient.
  • I kept my ODP working file separate.
  • I checked the option in the format list when creating the delivery copy.
  • I opened the delivery copy in the target application and reviewed the slides.
  • If applicable, I played and checked the animations and transitions.
  • I also applied the corrections to the master file.

Frequently asked questions

Will an Impress presentation open in PowerPoint?

The Impress Guide says that ODP presentations can be opened in other presentation software, such as Microsoft PowerPoint. This does not mean every presentation will look perfect; check your delivery copy in the target application.

How do I save the file in PowerPoint format?

Open File > Save As and review the format list. If the format requested by the recipient is listed, select it and save a copy. If the menu or option names look different in your version, check the list and help information in your application.

Which application should I choose?

Base your choice on who will make the final edits and the required delivery format. If these are not yet clear, ask the recipient first; keep your ODP master file and test the delivery copy in the target application.
