How to make a presentation video on Canva

Learn the two ways to turn a Canva presentation into a video: check whether your interface offers video download, or record your screen and narration in Canva.

First, decide what you want to create

“Turning a Canva presentation into a video” can mean getting ready-made slides as a video file or recording your screen while you present. These are not the same process. Canva’s current help resources do not confirm a definitive menu path or setting available to everyone for downloading a presentation design directly as a video. So don’t assume that this option is available for every design or account. Check the options offered in your own Canva interface.

If a narrated recording suits your needs, you can use Canva’s documented Record yourself workflow. Canva’s guide to creating and editing videos explains that, in this recording workflow, Camera & Screen records both you and the entire presentation, while Screen records the presentation with narration. Before you begin, confirm which options appear on your screen and what the layout you choose will record.

Prepare the presentation design and its appearance

Make sure you have the correct presentation design open in Canva; check that you are not working on another design, a cover page, or a single element within the presentation. Reviewing the presentation from beginning to end to check page order, text readability, and visuals is a useful preparatory step. This is a practical recommendation for reviewing the final output, not a technical Canva feature.

If you’re recording, prepare the presentation view you want to show your audience. Check which page is open in the editor and which page will be active when you add the recording to the design: Canva’s guide states that choosing Save and back to editing adds the recording to the page that is currently active in the design. Review the view shown on your screen before starting the recording; the source does not say that every interface offers the same window or tab selection.

Option A: If the interface offers a video download option

With your presentation design open, check the download options offered in the Canva interface. If an option is explicitly presented as a video file, follow the steps shown on screen. Don’t assume the option’s name, availability, file format, or quality settings in advance; confirm them in your own interface. If no video format appears, don’t try to create a video by changing the extension of a different file type.

Once the download is complete, open the file on your device and review it from beginning to end. Check the page order, visuals, and any audio or animated content. If you notice a problem, first identify at which stage it occurred; don’t assume a setting exists if it is not actually shown in the Canva interface.

Option B: Record the presentation in Canva

If you want to share the presentation as a narrated recording, open the Uploads tab in the Canva editor and look for Record yourself. The steps in Canva’s official recording guide explain how to set up the recording window and choose a suitable layout from Camera, Camera & Screen, or Screen. The source describes Camera as recording only the person; Camera & Screen as recording the person and the entire presentation; and Screen as recording the presentation with narration. Use the option that suits your needs if it appears in your interface.

If you choose to use a camera or microphone, set them up in the recording window. If your browser asks for permission to access a device, consider the access required by the recording layout you’ve selected; using a camera is not necessary for every recording. When you’re ready, select Record to begin, then End recording when you’re finished. The guide also includes options to pause or restart the recording and to add it to the design with Save and back to editing. Before saving, check again that the active page is the correct one.

This method is not the same as automatically converting a silent presentation file into a video: the recording’s content depends on the layout you choose. Canva’s guide to creating videos with Magic Design describes how to create a short video from uploaded photos and videos; don’t treat this guide as instructions for exporting an existing presentation.

Example: a short project presentation

Hypothetical example: A team wants to turn its project proposal into content that can be watched before a meeting. Its five-page draft might look like this:

  • Cover: project name and main message.
  • Problem: a brief summary of the current situation.
  • Proposal: the key steps in the solution.
  • Implementation: responsibilities and the next stage.
  • Closing: the next step expected of the audience.

The team first opens the correct presentation design and checks the pages in order. Then it checks whether its own interface offers a video file download option. If the option appears, it reviews the downloaded file. If it does not appear and a narrated recording would suit its purpose, the team reviews the Record yourself options and chooses Camera & Screen or Screen, whichever is available in the interface and meets its needs. Before adding the recording to the design, it checks the active page, then reviews the recorded result. This example does not claim that a specific menu or export format is available to everyone.

Troubleshooting and further reading

The downloaded file isn’t what I expected: Check what type of file appears on your device and whether it opens. Then review the page flow, visuals, and any audio. If you used a recording, check whether it was added to the design in Canva and whether it is on the correct page.

Audio or animated content is missing or can’t be heard: Preview the relevant page in Canva, then check the downloaded or recorded file. Don’t present a particular setting as a guaranteed fix before identifying the cause of the problem. Final checklist

  • I opened the correct presentation design and checked the page order and readability.
  • I didn’t assume a video download option was available; I confirmed whether my interface offered one.
  • If I made a recording, I checked what the selected layout records and which page is active.
  • I opened the downloaded or recorded file and reviewed the visuals, flow, and any audio.

Frequently asked questions

Is downloading a presentation as a video the same as recording it?

No. If your interface offers a video file download option, you can use it. Record yourself is a workflow for recording the camera view, screen, and/or narration, depending on the layout you choose.

What should I do if I don’t see a video download option?

Check the download options currently available for your design; don’t assume a menu step that isn’t shown. If a narrated recording suits your needs, check whether Record yourself is available in the Canva editor and confirm that the recording is added to the correct page.
