Google Slides animations bullet points

Learn how to reveal bullet points one by one in Google Slides by adding an animation to your text box and enabling By paragraph, with full troubleshooting tips.

To show bullet points one by one in Google Slides, select the text box containing your list, go to Insert > Animation (or View > Motion) from the top menu, and check the "By paragraph" box in the object animation settings that open in the right panel. Once this setting is applied, each click of the mouse or press of the spacebar during the presentation reveals the list items individually on screen.

This method prevents the audience from reading all the slide text at once and losing track of the presenter's delivery, keeping focus squarely on what is currently being discussed. Unlike overall slide transitions, this configuration manages the step-by-step reveal of lines inside the chosen text box throughout the presentation flow.

Prerequisites and Interface Verification

Before creating your animations, verify your workspace setup and slide layout:

  • Computer environment: According to Google Workspace documentation, adding or editing animations and slide transitions is carried out on a computer using a web browser at slides.google.com (Google Docs Editors Help).
  • Text and list structure: The items you want to reveal in sequence must reside in the same text box as standalone paragraphs or bullet points ended with the Enter key. Soft line breaks made with Shift + Enter within a single line may not be recognized by the system as separate paragraphs.
  • Right-hand panel: The panel on the right side of the interface is used to adjust animation parameters. If the panel is closed, it can be opened directly from the menu bar.

If you want to review transition settings more comprehensively, check our guide on Google Slides animations and transitions.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Reveal Bullet Points in Sequence

The object animation steps detailed in the official Google Workspace documentation are applied in the following order:

  1. Open your presentation in Google Slides on your computer.
  1. Click the bulleted text box where you want to apply the animation.
  1. From the top menu, choose "Insert" > "Animation" or click directly on "View" > "Motion".
  1. In the panel that opens on the right, find the added animation block under "Object animations". When a new object animation is added, it is defined by default as "Appear (On click)" in the right panel (Google Workspace Learning Center).
  1. Select the effect you want to use (such as Appear, Fade in, or Fly in) from the dropdown list.
  1. For the start condition, keep "On click" in the second dropdown menu or adjust it according to your needs.
  1. To make each line of the list appear individually on a separate click, make sure to check the "By paragraph" box. If this checkbox is left unchecked, the entire list appears at once.
  1. If you want to change the animation speed, drag the slider in the panel.
  1. Click the "Play" button at the bottom of the panel to test how the effect works before starting your slideshow.

Start Triggers and Timing Configurations

Google Slides provides three different start timing options for each object in the animation panel:

  • On click: The animation begins when the left mouse button is clicked or the spacebar is pressed on the keyboard. Use this option when you want to advance items manually to match your speaking pace.
  • After previous: The animation starts automatically as soon as the preceding animation or slide transition completes.
  • With previous: The animation triggers simultaneously at the exact moment the preceding animation starts.

If you want items to stream sequentially without requiring clicks, set the start time to "After previous" and adjust the pacing using the speed slider.

Concrete Practical Example: Project Status Presentation

To make the process concrete, consider a hypothetical list of project stages to be presented at a team meeting:

  • Text Box Content:
  • * Phase 1: Completion of UI wireframes (Hypothetical Target: November 10)
  • * Phase 2: Database integration and testing (Hypothetical Target: November 24)
  • * Phase 3: Final go-live and client sign-off (Hypothetical Target: December 5)

Implementation Steps:

Click to select the text box containing the three items above. Go to "Insert > Animation" from the menu. Select your preferred entrance effect from the effect menu and leave the trigger set to "On click". Immediately check the "By paragraph" box below it.

When the slide opens in presentation mode, the title is visible, but the three items are not yet on screen. The first time you press the spacebar or click the mouse, Phase 1 appears. When you finish explaining and press a second time, Phase 2 displays, and on the third press, Phase 3 appears in order. Common Issues and Troubleshooting

If your bullet points do not appear one by one during your presentation, check these technical details:

  • Unchecked "By Paragraph" Box: Leaving this box unchecked is the most common mistake. Without this checkmark, the animation treats the entire text box as a single object. Open the Motion panel on the right and confirm that the box is checked.
  • Using Line Breaks Instead of Paragraph Breaks: If Shift + Enter was used instead of Enter to move to a new line when drafting list items, the system does not count it as a separate paragraph. Place the cursor at the end of the item and press Enter to convert lines into genuine paragraphs.
  • Using Separate Text Boxes: If items were placed across three separate text boxes instead of being written as a single list inside one text box, the "By paragraph" setting cannot order them. Combine the items into a single box, or add individual animations to each separate box and sequence them.

Pre-Presentation Verification Checklist

Complete these checks before presenting to your audience:

  • Click the "Play" button in the Motion panel to test that list elements open sequentially with each click.
  • Switch to full-screen presentation mode via the slideshow button in the upper right and confirm that items start hidden when the slide opens.
  • Press the spacebar or click the mouse to confirm that each item appears individually at the intended speed.
  • If sub-bullet points (indented lines) exist, observe whether they appear hierarchically after their parent item in the correct order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can items be made to appear sequentially on their own without clicking?

Yes. In the animation panel, you can choose "After previous" instead of "On click" from the start time menu. In this case, animations trigger immediately after the preceding action finishes, and items appear on screen one after another without requiring user clicks.

Can second-level sub-bullets also appear one by one?

Yes. Sub-list items indented with the Tab key are also recognized as independent paragraph lines. When the "By paragraph" option is enabled, a subsequent click made after the parent item appears will bring up the sub-item on screen.
